Monday
We will work on 2 pieces of upcycled wall art to practice decoupage and stencilling. This will introduce you to antiquing, wax guilding, crackle glaze and varnishes.

Tuesday
Sourcing second hand furniture and how to spot an appropriate piece for upcycling. Start work on your furniture, checking for damage, repairing and preparing for painting. You will then design your pieces and plan the process. Start painting and practice brush skills.

Wednesday
Continue working on your furniture. Design plans often change as your piece evolves.

Thursday
Adding decorative details and protecting your work with varnish/wax. Celebrate your amazing work.

Sunday

You’ll have access to all required tools and equipment, including resource books, paints, brushes, waxes, stencils, decoupage materials and varnishes.

We kindly ask all participant to bring the following:

• Please wear an apron/old clothes in the knowledge that they may get covered in paint!
• Two small pieces of wooden furniture with you. e.g. a nest of tables, an occasional table, a side table, magazine rack, a trunk, box, cabinet, a bedside table, coffee table, magazine rack, 1-2 dining chairs, a stool, or a small cabinet. These can be sourced for you, on request from the tutor in advance, for an additional charge of £15 per piece. Anything personal you would like to incorporate. eg. handles, pictures, paper, wall paper, transfers/decals

Optional:

• A small to medium sized picture/mirror with a flat, wide frame for decoupage/stencilling. If you do not have a frame, your tutor will supply a frame or wood offcuts.

By the end of the week you will have completed an A4 - A3 sized piece of stained-glass in your preferred design to keep and cherish for years to come.

Over the course of four days, you will cover the following construction technique:

• Learn how to cut plain glass to fit their design
• Practise joining the pieces using either lead or copper foil.
• Solder plain glass – then throw it away!
• Cut the coloured glass required for your chosen design.
• Lead up the glass.
• Solder the joins.
• Cement the piece.
• Final polish.

Please note: Due to the nature of the course and materials used, we cannot accommodate pregnant ladies and haemophiliacs.

All tools, materials and safety glasses will be provided for the course.

The ideal clothing for the course is ‘old’ items that are worn in the knowledge that they may be subject to damage and subsequent disposal. The addition of a heavy-duty stout apron or natural fibre (e.g. cotton) apron would be helpful.

Monday
Selecting fabric kit and apply stiffening to basic shapes.
Draw out design details with guidance on techniques required to create effects. Assemble detail elements then stitch onto separate stiffened parts.

Tuesday
Complete additional details, and embellish separate parts through stiffening. before starting to construct finished article.

Wednesday
Continue construction of final article adding any hand embroidery required,

Thursday
Complete construction with stuffing. Apply any other decoration such as beading/buttons for finishing touch.
Final showcase exhibition and photographs!

Sunday

Your tutor will provide a wide selection of up-cycled fabric samples for use throughout the week.
Participants are most welcome to bring along their favourite fabrics, for example items that have sentimental meaning such as children’s clothes, or co-ordinating patterns and colours of your choice.

We kindly ask all participants to bring the following:

• Sewing machine with manual (if you have one!) and any attachments such as darning foot for free machining.
• A variety of coloured machine thread. Assorted ribbons and buttons if you have them. If not, your tutor will have a selection to choose from.
• Pins, hand-sewing needles. Large fabric and small sharp scissors, inch tape, pencil and 12” ruler.

We ask all sewing course participants to bring the following:

• Sewing pattern – please let us know if you need any advice
• Calico (available to purchase from your tutor – £2.50 per metre)
• Threads, fabric scissors, pins, tape measure, seam ripper and any other sewing tools that you use
• Pattern tracing paper
• Paper scissors
• French curve if you have one (your tutor will bring curves for use during the stay)
• Fine liner pen (coloured), pencil
• Fabric and all necessary notions for making the final garment – if you reach that stage
• Sewing machine and instruction booklet (also available to rent – please let us know in advance if you require one – hire fee payable direct to your tutor.

We kindly ask all guests to bring the following:

• Pencils.
• Paper for drawing out ideas and planning colours. A4 sketch is fine – it does not have to be great quality. You can also bring different colours and types of paper to print on. Patterned wrapping paper or even brown is nice to try.
• Bring any images that you might use to make a print. They can be sketches, cut from magazines or newspapers, printed from the internet or an old greetings card for example.

We advise guests to bring an apron/wear old clothes in the knowledge that they may get messy. We also recommend bringing an old rag, towel or similar to clean your hands as you work.

Photography holiday participants are asked to bring the following with them. 

• A camera – ideally digital with a manual control option, but whatever you usually shoot with will be fine. Ewan loves to shoot on film but the opportunity to process and review images during your stay will be limited. Make sure you have spare batteries too.
• A laptop – to download, process and review images. If you don’t have laptop, you can add images to Ewan’s for reviewing and feedback but the image processing you’ll be able to do during your time at Gartmore will be limited.
• Tripod – useful for longer exposures, recording the movement of water etc. Ewan has a couple that guests can use but if you don’t want to share or wait your turn then it would be best to bring one with you.
• Weather appropriate clothes – you will spend as much time as possible outdoors in the beautiful landscape with your cameras, and it’s nice to be dry! Bring a few layers, something waterproof and walking shoes.

Sampler Blocks and Quilts
A fun versatile way to learn a range of patchwork and quilting skills both traditional and modern. Choose from a wide and ever increasing range of designs to make useful and beautiful items from cushions, bags, runners, etc to quilts of all sizes. Additionally, there are two variations of Modern Sampler Quilts with new modern patchwork techniques to learn and an opportunity to learn and practice new modern ways of machine quilting.

Delectable Mountain Quilts
This is a lovely design with a modern feel if made with just two contrasting plain fabrics – or it is an ideal scrap buster or layer cake project for a very different look. Once the blocks are made (with Clare’s favourite ‘speedy’ method) there are many different ways they can be used, so lots to play with!

Curved Strip Piecing (2022)
New for 2022 play with curved strip piecing techniques for speedy curvy quilts! Clare will gently guide you through successful curved piecing techniques and speedy cutting techniques for larger projects.

Patchwork Rug (2022)
First in a proposed series of patchwork rugs, this design is ideal for using up all those offcuts of wadding and fabrics. Start keeping them now for a fun way to recycle and add warmth and colour to your floor!

Improv Piecing (2023)
Here anything goes but it’s very useful to have technical guidelines to ensure you can achieve what you set out to make without running into snarly snags. Your piece can be large or small and full guidance will be given on design and construction in piecing and quilting and finishing. Improv without fear – if you’ve wanted to have a go at this technique but weren’t quite sure where to start – this is the place!

UFOs (Unfinished Objects) or WIPs (Works In Progress)
Guests are always very welcome to bring along their own projects to work on. Our patchwork and quilting holidays offer a great opportunity to finish those UFOs or WIPs – with the luxury of time, space and expert advice on hand if needed – you can finally see those projects completed! If you have a kit you’ve started and got stuck – or been unable to start at all – do bring it along and we’ll get things moving.

You will need to bring:

• fabric,
• backing fabric
• wadding
• thread

The exact requirements above will depend on your choice of project – further information about the projects, pictures and a detailed kit list can be found here.

You’ll also need:

• A sewing kit – pins, needles, scissors (for fabric and paper), thimble etc. (your tutor will be able to help you out if you have forgotten or are having trouble sourcing anything)
• Freezer paper for some sampler blocks if you have it (or you can purchase the small amounts required from your tutor) Also useful for reproducible curves in curved strip piecing if random curves are not your thing. You would need a minimum of 1.2 m for that purpose.
• Rotary cutter, mat and ruler
• Sewing machine (don’t forget to bring your instruction booklet!). Alternatively, you can hire a sewing machine from your tutor (£50 for the week – please let us know in advance if you require this – all hire machines will have a quarter inch foot, walking foot and free machine quilting foot (darning or embroidery foot)).

There will be a small selection of fabrics and sundries as well as books available for sale.

Wadding on the roll will also be available:

• 100% cotton 90″ wide;
• 80/20 cotton/polyester adhesive wadding 96″ wide;
• ecoblend recycled 80/20 cotton /polyester 90” wide.

Please let Clare know in advance if you would like to order wadding to ensure everyone has what they need. There will be extra on hand if you forget or change plans.
