Your Course Tutor: Nigel Overton

Since studying Drawing, Painting & Printmaking at Loughborough College of Art & Design Nigel has worked with a wide range of different media but in recent years has mainly worked in acrylics.

Whatever the medium, he has always maintained his belief in the importance of drawing, both in his own work and while teaching. Nigel has been fascinated with landscapes and seascapes since his early years as an art student. Drawing and painting continue to provide him with the visual means of expressing his personal and emotional response to an ever-changing subject.

Formerly Head of Art & Design at Benton Park School in Leeds, Nigel now paints professionally and teaches day and residential classes. Nigel has work in private collections in America, Canada, New Zealand, France, Germany, Netherlands and Australia. You can find out more about Nigel’s work by visiting the website Overton Fine Arts.

    Millinery Holiday

Please note: The above reviews come from past workshops and courses run by the tutor out with Gartmore House.

    Your Course Tutor: Susie Rodgers

Susie Rodgers is an award-winning milliner specialising in creating bespoke hats and fascinators from her studio in one of Paisleys iconic thread mill buildings. She has turned her love of wearing hats into a passion for making them and she loves seeing her creations worn to special events such as weddings, Ascot and royal garden parties. She also loves inspiring and teaching others to make their own head-turning headpieces.

Susie has always loved wearing hats so it was perhaps inevitable that the first career she embarked on would require her to wear a hat most days, although the yellow safety hat she wore working in health and safety management is nowhere near as stylish as the ones she creates today! She hung up her safety hat in 2003 during a career break to raise her son but when he went off to school instead of picking back up the safety hat Susie went to college to study millinery. By the end of the second week she realised that making hats, not safety policies, is what she should have been doing with her life!

    Your Course Tutor: Susie Finlayson

Susie is a professional hand embroiderer based in the Scottish Borders who specialises in delivering workshops in various techniques to encourage people to take up embroidery or improve their existing skills.

Following an introduction to needlepoint and knitting at her granny’s knee Susie developed a keen interest in counted cross stitch and found it a great way to relax after studying and work.

In 2012 Susie became involved with the Great Tapestry of Scotland project, initially tracing the designs onto panels and sending out wool orders to stitchers across Scotland. Susie was persuaded to have a go at this style of embroidery resulting in her stitching on two panels and embarking on a dramatic change in career.

In 2019 Susie was chosen as one of the SWI (Scottish Women’s Institutes) Evelyn Baxter scholars and delivered a series of 2-day Basic Embroidery classes to members across Scotland.

Susie has co-ordinated the stitching of a number of large scale community textile projects including the Welcome Panel for the Great Tapestry of Scotland Visitor Centre, the Borders Railway Tapestry for the Galashiels Transport Interchange and the Cabrach Tapestry.
Susie designs her own pieces and delivers a variety of textile workshops including basic embroidery, crewelwork, canvas work, blackwork, and Dorset buttons. Whether you are complete beginner or an improver the focus is very much on relaxing and enjoying the process of learning new skills.

    Brigid Collins

Brigid is an artist and educator whose practice is deeply rooted in close and loving observation of the natural world. She makes paintings and drawings inspired by poetry as well as working in three-dimensions and with the form of the book and is most often drawn to the tactility and sensuousness of materials such as pastels, watercolour, porcelain, tissue, wire and wax, encapsulating fragility and strength in equal measure. She has collaborated and published books with poets and authors Seamus Heaney, Kathleen Jamie and Kirsty Gunn and, most recently, also with Christine De Luca, while spending a year as Artist in Residence at Dr. Neil’s Garden in Duddingston, Edinburgh where she recently exhibited at Playfair’s wonderful Thomson’s Tower, set deep in the garden and on the shores of the loch.

Having just spent such a very happy and healing time working almost exclusively outdoors, Brigid is currently focussing on developing new work. She hopes to begin to find ways to build on this practice of working ‘en plein air’, while at the same time enjoying time being back in the studio, which really is an extension of herself and a place to create in a different way, akin to inhabiting one of her favourite poems…

    Nigel Overton

We are delighted to be working with Nigel Overton to deliver this mixed media painting course.

    Kit Neufeld

Kit is a graduate of the Scottish College of Textiles specialising in knitted fabrics, and throughout her time there, she found that the use of fine art skills such as drawing and painting were vital when searching for inspiration to create. Throughout the week, Kit will assist you in the process of honing and expanding your skill set as you work towards a personal goal with the hope that when you leave you will have gained the confidence in your own drawing skill.

Using a variety of materials and techniques, Kit will guide you as you study different subjects each day allowing for a productive but enjoyable experience.

This course is suitable for all levels, whether a complete beginner ready to start something new or a skilled artist looking for new challenge.

    About The Course

If you’re having trouble finding Mixed Media Textiles courses near you then why not come on holiday to Gartmore House and learn with the best?

The week is all about playing and experimenting with colour and texture using paints, fabrics, heat, threads, wire, beads and embellishments.  We will be using traditional materials and tools, but in non-traditional ways.  We will discover the exciting and unpredictable results of heat on new textiles. Then we allowing our imagination to be our guide as we arrange the colours, shapes and textures into an image, either an abstract or representational image of a landscape or seascape. You will be encouraged and supported to create your own completely unique picture, capturing your own personal sensations and experiences.

No previous experience in art, painting or textiles is necessary, but using any previous creative experiences will enhance the workshop for everyone and will add an extra dimension to your finished work. We will be learning together, sharing what works, what doesn’t and Eureka moments.

This course is not for the faint hearted as you will be applying acrylic paint to silk, heat to delicate organza, Lutrador and Tyvek, and even knitting with wire. These newly created samples will become elements in a picture created in a way that is pleasing on the eye but without the formalities of prescribed “rules” or “ a pattern”.

This workshop is full of fun and wonderment and the results often surprise and delight the participants.

    Your Course Tutor: Angela Neilson

Angela learned to sew her own clothes & embroider before she was 10 year old.   A later formative influence was her Art teacher at secondary school who introduced her to batik and creative embroidery which she then rediscovered at a class run by Aberdeen City Council in the 1990s. She now has the grounding of more than 25 years membership of The Embroiderer’s Guild and has benefitted from the tuition of some of the “big names” in the creative textile world.

Her Mixed Media journey took off during her 4 years of Study at Moray College, UHI while working towards the City & Guilds Craft & Design (Embroidery). She was awarded the Certificate in 2013 and the Diploma in 2015.

The college course and degree shows at UHI gave her the confidence to exhibit on her own and she has been participating annually in North East Open Studios since. She has also exhibited with the Embroiderer’s Guild, in branch and regional exhibitions. Her machine embroidered prom dress was selected as a finalist in the Creative Upcycling Challenge at The Sewing for Pleasure Show in NEC in 2017.

In 1995 Angela was invited to become a member of Embroidery Textile Tutors Scotland (ETTS).  She has been teaching creative stitch and mixed media textile techniques regularly since then.

    More Reviews...

As someone who is a lover of books but new to the creative writing process, Laura put me at ease straight away and helped me overcome my creative writing fears and blocks. Laura taught me many tools to help spark creativity, to make characters come to life, and the elements needed to make a good story. She answered any questions I had and provided honest feedback. In addition, Laura’s course was a lot of fun and I looked forward to attending each day. The combination of Laura’s expertise and the wonderful setting at Gartmore House culminated in a lifelong writing dream vacation and a wonderfully unexpected personal growth experience. If anyone has the opportunity to work with Laura at Gartmore House, I highly recommend doing so. Thank you, Laura, for an amazing week!

    Chris

Spending the week with Laura at Gartmore House, surrounded by fellow budding writers and their thoughtful feedback, was deeply inspiring. Her gentle encouragement through varied writing prompts uncovered a style of writing I hadn’t realised was within me. The one-to-one sessions and early morning walks in the beautiful grounds helped resolve my writing block, setting me back on course with my autobiography. Thank-you so much Laura, you're very special, a talented and inspiring tutor.

    Rosalind

Thank you so much for a wonderful week with lots of encouragement and gentle instruction. I’ve loved the teaching and the exercises and, of course, the “permission” to write as well! The surroundings and all that food also helped to make it a restorative and lovely week.

    Tessa, april 2024 workshop

Thank you for a brilliant week last week, it was just perfect to talk books and films and writing and of course to get going again with the novel. You will be pleased to hear that I have a few more chapters under my belt now and am just about to send Ezzie [central character] back into the real world, something that I would never get her to do. I cannot thank you enough for your encouragement.

    Sarah, April 2024 workshop

I haven’t stopped raving about my writing retreat! My husband was a bit miffed when I announced at a family gathering that I loved it as it was “the best time ever!” I am writing most days and enjoying it so much. When I don’t write, even just a sentence or two, I feel like I’ve not washed my face. It’s lovely having something that’s just mine.

    Louise, april 2024 workshop

Laura has a deep knowledge of her craft and the ability to nurture talent in others with patience, insight and empathy. You will learn a lot from the time spent with her while also gaining confidence in your own abilities. At the start of the week I had no direction and had previously given up writing, but with her guidance, by the end of the week I had built a sustainable framework for keeping myself accountable and long term creativity. Most importantly I am excited to be writing again.

    Chris

I wrote more today than I've written in twenty years!

    CREATIVE BOOK BINDING - IMPROVERS

Building on the basics learned on the Creative Book Binding this four-day Improvers course acts as a refresher for the techniques learned there. The topics included will take into account those covered by guests on their first visit as each course is a little different!

Throughout the week, you’ll get the chance to experiment with alternatives such as Bradel spines, decorative stitched bindings and more. There will be samples on hand to hopefully motivate and inspire you.

The four days are loosely planned as follows:

    Monday

Making a hard-back book: refreshing and extending the techniques you learned on the first course, you’ll make an A5 hard back, half-bound book using the French Link stitch, add headbands and a marker ribbon. You’ll add space for a title and attach the block to a hard case that’s covered with decorative paper and book cloth.

    Tuesday

Decorative Spine Bindings: learn how to make 1, 2 and 3 section notebooks with hard covers and decoratively stitched spines.

You'll learn how to measure, cut and fold for each style and explore a variety of different hard cover options including a soft spine cover, a full book cloth-covered cover and a Bradel spine cover.

You will also learn how to read a stitching pattern to create attractive binding designs.

    Wednesday

Making boxes for books: make a lidded box with several compartments covered in book cloth and decorative papers.

    Thursday

Morning: learn how to make more complex, folded book structures such as crown binding, lotus flower, and flag books. You’ll make hard covers for your books that incorporate titles and apertures and cover them using decorative papers and cloth.

Afternoon: The final part of the course is flexible and up to you! Using any of the materials available, take time to experiment, practice and hone your book-making skills; be creative and have fun!

    Kit List

As before, all the materials and equipment for your course will be provided, but please feel free to bring along any of your own materials or projects you have been working on.
