About The Course

When life leaves your creativity blocked sometimes the only thing to do is to get away from it all.

When life leaves your creativity blocked, sometimes the only thing to do is to get away from it all. And what better way to do that than with a macrame course at Gartmore House?

You’ll spend 4 days in the workshop, learning all the principles and knots of macrame with hands-on guidance and tuition from your tutor, Lucy Wayman, whilst enjoying the comforts of Gartmore House. Macrame can be used in so many decorative and practical ways in your home, wardrobe, and garden.

Enjoy a relaxing stay surrounded by stunning Scottish countryside and learn from the very best. There isn’t anything like our macrame courses. Through a series of specially designed projects, you’ll develop the skills and confidence to create an advanced macrame piece, playing with size and intricacy by the end of the course. You’ll learn how to estimate rope lengths, plan designs, add color, and be playful with your projects to create one-of-a-kind macrame. If you have any treasure gems such as beads, driftwood, hoops, and charms looking for a permanent home, bring them along, and Lucy will show you how to incorporate them into your design. You’ll come away from the course with beautiful, unique macrame pieces and the knowledge to continue making at home.

HOBBYING AT HOGMANAY NEAR YOU?

Join Us At Gartmore House For Our Hobbying at Hogmanay

available dates :

December 2021 - January 2022

“I was looking for a New Year’s Eve holiday where I could combine my time away with some crafting and Gartmore House ticked every box.”

About The Course

Would you like to do something a little bit different this New Year’s Eve?

It’s no secret that we’re always on the look out for ways to make our guests’ stays as special as possible. That’s why we came up with Hobbying at Hogmany, a unique New Year’s getaway.

If you enjoy art or craft, we invite you to spend 5 nights with us in our quaint and quirky 18th century home, with beautiful period features, comfortable en-suite accommodation and delicious home-made food. Bring your hobby with you, whether that’s your paint brushes, knitting needles, sewing machine or even walking boots, enjoy the peace and quiet of the house, make use of our wonderful art and craft rooms and work on your own project at your leisure.

Settle in by the fire, enjoy the picturesque vistas, and join us at Gartmore House on New Year’s Eve for Hobbying at Hogmanay.
Over the course of your stay, we will organise an optional visit to a local historic attraction, giving you the chance to take in the mountains, lochs and glens of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, as well as fascinating historic sights. And if it’s too much of a struggle to tear yourself away from the roaring, open fire in the lounge, that’s absolutely fine – just relax and enjoy the stunning views over to Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument or dabble away at a crossword or jigsaw puzzle.

On the evening of the 31st December, we have a couple of options for you. Perhaps you’d prefer a quiet, cosy night with a special Hogmanay meal before retiring by the fire – or maybe you’re looking for a livelier way to see in the New Year, in which case you can choose to attend our local ceilidh in the village of Gartmore, bringing in the bells with a traditional village feel.

We want to take the stress out of travel, especially over the festive period, so to make your journey go smoothly we offer a complimentary scheduled pick up and drop off service from Stirling train station, which has excellent rail links with Glasgow and Edinburgh.

“If you want to spend your holiday doing some hill walking training near you, I can’t recommend Gartmore enough, the location is fantastic.”

About The Course

Nestled within the heart of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, Gartmore House is situated in the best location for a hill walking holiday.

Walking holidays are a wonderful way to experience Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. Everywhere you look, there’s lush greenery, rolling hills, and dense forests, and over the course of your 5-night stay, you’ll get to explore plenty of it!

Our guided hill walking training will give you the chance to discover the best of the Scottish landscape. David Walsh, owner of Emmaus Adventure and qualified mountain leader, will be your guide throughout. Many people may aspire to enjoy exploring on foot, but perhaps lack the confidence to just go for it on their own.

During your stay you will enjoy a selection of walks throughout Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. The aim of this holiday is to help budding walkers to feel comfortable climbing their first Munro or Corbett and pick up a bit of advice on map reading and general guidance on safely negotiating your way around some of the best hills and glens in Scotland.

You will start the week building up slowly from 4-6-hour walks to longer 6-8-hour walks; perhaps climbing one of two local Munros – Ben Lomond or Ben Ime at the end of the week.

Naturally a introduction to Scottish hill walking will include an element of the ‘mountain environment’. This can be translated as, rough terrain with no paths, mixed weather, steeper ascents and descents. As such this course is most suited to people who enjoy exercising or walking on a regular basis.

She ensures all pupils, no matter what level they are stitching at, are part of the group and able to complete the project. Can’t recommend her classes enough, her fun and positive outlook on life makes every class is a real joy.

Your Course Tutor: Susie Finlayson

Susie is a professional hand embroiderer based in the Scottish Borders who specialises in delivering workshops in various techniques to encourage people to take up embroidery or improve their existing skills.

Following an introduction to needlepoint and knitting at her granny’s knee Susie developed a keen interest in counted cross stitch to relax after studying and work.

In 2012 Susie became involved with the Great Tapestry of Scotland project, initially tracing the designs onto panels and sending out wool orders to stitchers across Scotland. Previews of partially stitched panels encouraged Susie to have a go at this new style of embroidery and she ended up stitching on two panels and it has lead to a dramatic change in career.

Susie now designs her own pieces and delivers a variety of workshops. The focus is very much on relaxing and enjoying the process of learning a new skill.

In 2019 Susie was chosen as one of the SWI (Scottish Women’s Institutes) Evelyn Baxter scholars and delivered a series of 2-day Basic Embroidery classes to members across Scotland.

Susie is still involved with the Great Tapestry of Scotland and is currently coordinating the stitching of five new ‘Welcome’ panels which will be displayed at the entrance of the new tapestry visitor centre, due to open in Galashiels in 2021.

Susie is also currently working towards a Certificate in Technical Hand Embroidery with the Royal School of Needlework, studying with Helen McCook in Glasgow.

Your Course Tutor: Kit Neufeld

Kit is a graduate of the Scottish College of Textiles specialising in knitted fabrics, and throughout her time there, she found that the use of fine art skills such as drawing and painting were vital when searching for inspiration to create. Throughout the week, Kit will assist you in the process of honing and expanding your skill set as you work towards a personal goal with the hope that when you leave you will have gained the confidence in your own drawing skill.

Using a variety of materials and techniques, Kit will guide you as you study different subjects each day allowing for a productive but enjoyable experience.

This course is suitable for all levels, whether a complete beginner ready to start something new or a skilled artist looking for new challenge.

Brigid Collins

Brigid is an artist and educator whose practice is deeply rooted in close and loving observation of the natural world. She makes paintings and drawings inspired by poetry as well as working in three-dimensions and with the form of the book and is most often drawn to the tactility and sensuousness of materials such as pastels, watercolour, porcelain, tissue, wire and wax, encapsulating fragility and strength in equal measure. She has collaborated and published books with poets and authors Seamus Heaney, Kathleen Jamie and Kirsty Gunn and, most recently, also with Christine De Luca, while spending a year as Artist in Residence at Dr. Neil’s Garden in Duddingston, Edinburgh where she recently exhibited at Playfair’s wonderful Thomson’s Tower, set deep in the garden and on the shores of the loch.

Having just spent such a very happy and healing time working almost exclusively outdoors, Brigid is currently focussing on developing new work. She hopes to begin to find ways to build on this practice of working ‘en plein air’, while at the same time enjoying time being back in the studio, which really is an extension of herself and a place to create in a different way, akin to inhabiting one of her favourite poems…
