About The Course

If you’re having trouble finding a Mosaics course near you then why not come on holiday to Gartmore House and learn with the best?

Discover the timeless art of mosaics in this four-day workshop designed for participants of all skill levels. This workshop will guide you through the fundamentals of traditional mosaic-making and is fully accessible to beginners as well as those with some mosaic experience. Over the course of four days, you will learn about the classical secrets of laying your mosaic tiles to create harmonious work and come away with the knowledge you need to continue making mosaics at home. You will learn about mosaic tools and materials as well as how to prepare your base, cut, shape and lay your tiles and how to grout and finish your completed work.

Mosaic is an immersive medium renowned for its slow, meditative qualities. Helen has more than twenty years of experience of working with mosaics and is known for bringing together students of diverse abilities, inspiring enthusiasm in the process and pride in the results.

By the end of the workshop, you will have a beautiful, handmade mosaic to take home, along with a deeper appreciation for this ancient art form. All materials are provided, and no prior experience is required.

Mosaics – 3rd – 9th May 2026

Focusing on the reuse of pre-loved materials, artist and mosaicist, Katy Galbraith, will guide you through the various techniques in this four-day mosaic workshop. The mosaics made during the week will be suitable for outdoors and indoors.

The course looks at diverse types of reclaimed materials and how we can use them to express our creativity in mosaic. Furthermore, the participants will learn how to transport their ideas from paper to a finished piece to take home. The various substrates, appropriateness of suitable tiles and glass and the tools used will be explored throughout the week.

Working with mosaics is not a quick process but one that is very meditative. It is rewarding and surprising when viewed as a finished piece as all the elements play an important role: lines created by cut-up tiles and their interaction with grout, the way the light plays with tiles and reflects different colours, and how we can create clear shapes by placing the tiles in a defined order.

The course is suitable for everyone, including complete beginners

Participants will:

  • create their main mosaic from glass tiles and discarded ceramics, creating the design, choosing the correct materials for each project and how to make defined shapes from your tile pieces. This could be a house sign, a steppingstone, bird table or small shrine.
  • Create a small bird which can be incorporated into their main project or as part of a small second mosaic
  • Learn how to determine which materials to use for their projects when home
  • Learn the basic techniques needed in mosaic: prepping materials and suitable bases, applying adhesives, glass and ceramic tile cutting and grouting.

Your Course Tutor: Helen Miles

Helen Miles is a highly skilled mosaic artist and teacher, known for her beautifully crafted contemporary mosaics inspired by ancient techniques. Her fascination with mosaic making began during her time in Thessaloniki, Greece, where she trained under master craftsmen in Byzantine methods, working extensively with stone and marble  .

Now based at Abbeymount Studios in Edinburgh, Helen creates mosaic commissions for both interiors and exteriors, explores innovative materials—including found, recycled objects and single-use plastics—and leads both local and residential workshops in Scotland and Greece  .

Her first book, Mosaics: Ancient Techniques to Contemporary Art, was released in March 2023, reinforcing her role as a respected educator and writer on mosaic practic

Your Course Tutor: Katy Galbraith

Katy is a British mosaicist living in Perthshire, Scotland.

Flowers in abundance feature in most of her exhibition pieces, as well as in private commissions. Her mosaics are found in the National Museum of Scotland, at the Bield Centre, near Perth and in many private collections. While many of her pieces are considered ‘decorative art,’ she also enjoys making mosaics with a more practical purpose such as kitchen and bathroom splashbacks, mirrors, tabletops, and garden items.

She has taken part in international projects in Cyprus, Germany, Italy, and Tunisia, and taught mosaics in Cyprus and Spain.

In producing her mosaics, she aims to be true to herself and her interest in recycling and sustainability by incorporating many recycled materials, including those representing her and her local area in Perthshire or pieces donated for use by friends and family, like a traditional patchwork concept.

Katy believes that the true magic about mosaic and especially the reuse of alternative materials is the ability to play with different colours and then observe how the tiles reflect and play with the light.

About The Course

If you’re having trouble finding Doll making courses near you then why not come on holiday to Gartmore House and learn with the best?

This workshop is suitable for newbies or returners. Knowledge of basic sewing techniques are an advantage. Please note we are not making rags dolls, but art cloth dolls, the emphasis being on the art. Advanced knowledge of sewing, dressmaking and/or embroidery will most likely enable you to make faster progress and to display of your skills in the embellishment of the figure.

The course covers many of the basic doll making techniques, but will not include moving heads, complex joints, wiring or making a standing doll.

We start by orientating ourselves to the task and to the possibilities, by looking at books, images and Angela’s samples. Very quickly everyone will start to develop a vision of what they would like to make and can begin to identify their choice of body shape, joint type, colour palette, fabric, hair etc etc.

Using “skin” fabric we draw round the body, limb and head templates, then we stitch around each body part, by hand or by machine, before cutting out the pieces. Next, any further stitch is completed and each section will be turned and stuffed. With loads of samples and demonstration of techniques, Angela will support your work at every stage. There are tips and tricks to even the simplest of tasks that Angela will share. The stuffing can be the least exciting and most time-consuming part of the process, but it allows you to settle in, to relax, to get chatting and to get to know your fellow guests, or even watch TV while still busy with your hands!

At various stages there are optional extras for returners or for those who want to focus on one particular aspect or for those who want to push themselves to achieving a skill level above the basic eg wiring the fingers, needle-sculpting the face, drawing or embroidering facial features, and making a more advanced wig.

Finally, it all comes together when you will assemble the figure, attaching the arms, legs and head. True art cloth figures are decorated, adorned, even dressed as you go by applying fabrics, ribbons, beads, embroidery etc directly to the figure (and limbs) itself.

Basic sewing machine skills are helpful but not essential and some have even learned how to use their sewing machine while in this workshop. Hand stitching is, of course, a much more relaxing and meditative option, but progress will be slightly slower.

Angela will welcome a brief chat or E-mail exchange at least 2 weeks prior to the course which enables her to get an idea of what you are hoping for, to be optimally prepared to cover all your needs and to better bring to fruition your dreams for this workshop.

Your Course Tutor: Angela Neilson

Angela learned to sew her own clothes & embroider before she was 10 year old.   A later formative influence was her Art teacher at secondary school who introduced her to batik and creative embroidery which she then rediscovered at a class run by Aberdeen City Council in the 1990s. She now has the grounding of more than 25 years membership of The Embroiderer’s Guild and has benefitted from the tuition of some of the “big names” in the creative textile world.

Her Mixed Media journey took off during her 4 years of Study at Moray College, UHI while working towards the City & Guilds Craft & Design (Embroidery). She was awarded the Certificate in 2013 and the Diploma in 2015.

The college course and degree shows at UHI gave her the confidence to exhibit on her own and she has been participating annually in North East Open Studios since. She has also exhibited with the Embroiderer’s Guild, in branch and regional exhibitions. Her machine embroidered prom dress was selected as a finalist in the Creative Upcycling Challenge at The Sewing for Pleasure Show in NEC in 2017.

In 1995 Angela was invited to become a member of Embroidery Textile Tutors Scotland (ETTS).  She has been teaching creative stitch and mixed media textile techniques regularly since then.

About The Course

On Sunday evening we will meet together and look at examples of Carol's work as we begin to get to know each other. No specific experience is assumed, whatever your prior knowledge you are welcome, as her courses are suitable for all levels of skill.

Inspired by the seasonal theme relevant to your particular retreat, each day we will explore ideas using a range of art materials, and learn how to turn them into designs for your pottery.

Carol will give demonstrations of each pottery making method, and she’ll give you one-to-one guidance and tuition. The group will also learn from each other as the week progresses. Some of this activity will be indoors and, where appropriate, we will also work outside in the beautiful grounds of Gartmore House.

You will learn a different making technique every day so that by the end of the retreat, as well as developing your design ideas, you will also have gained a technical understanding of how to make pottery that has strength, is decorative, and will survive the firing process. As weather allows, we will fire some of the pottery you have made outdoors, in a raku kiln and/or a pit-firing kiln. You will end the course with examples of your design artwork and several finished articles of pottery.

Your Course Tutor: Nigel Overton

We are delighted to be working with Nigel Overton to deliver this mixed media painting course. Since studying Drawing, Painting & Printmaking at Loughborough College of Art & Design Nigel has worked with a wide range of different media but in recent years has mainly worked in acrylics.

Whatever the medium, he has always maintained his belief in the importance of drawing, both in his own work and while teaching. Nigel has been fascinated with landscapes and seascapes since his early years as an art student. Drawing and painting continue to provide him with the visual means of expressing his personal and emotional response to an ever-changing subject.

Formerly Head of Art & Design at Benton Park School in Leeds, Nigel now paints professionally and teaches day and residential classes. Nigel has work in private collections in America, Canada, New Zealand, France, Germany, Netherlands and Australia. You can find out more about Nigel’s work by visiting the website Overton Fine Arts.

Your Course Tutor: Brigid Collins

Brigid is an artist and educator whose practice is deeply rooted in close and loving observation of the natural world. She makes paintings and drawings inspired by poetry as well as working in three-dimensions and with the form of the book and is most often drawn to the tactility and sensuousness of materials such as pastels, watercolour, porcelain, tissue, wire and wax, encapsulating fragility and strength in equal measure. She has collaborated and published books with poets and authors Seamus Heaney, Kathleen Jamie and Kirsty Gunn and, most recently, also with Christine De Luca, while spending a year as Artist in Residence at Dr. Neil’s Garden in Duddingston, Edinburgh where she recently exhibited at Playfair’s wonderful Thomson’s Tower, set deep in the garden and on the shores of the loch.

Having just spent such a very happy and healing time working almost exclusively outdoors, Brigid is currently focussing on developing new work. She hopes to begin to find ways to build on this practice of working ‘en plein air’, while at the same time enjoying time being back in the studio, which really is an extension of herself and a place to create in a different way, akin to inhabiting one of her favourite poems…

I am an Irish textile artist working from my studio in the Scottish Borders. I specialise in creating unique, hand-felted items, from bags, purses and cushions to lampshades and small rugs. I love the process of felt making and find it's a wonderful way to explore colour and texture.

As an experienced art and design tutor, I have taught felt making to a wide range of students in various settings, including schools, colleges, and private workshops. I find it exciting and enjoyable to share my knowledge and skills with others.

My work has been exhibited throughout the UK, Ireland, and internationally.

About The Course

Are you wondering how to weave a willow plate holder or what it takes to turn wooden reeds into something useful? Gartmore House has you covered with our willow work courses.

This is an opportunity to spend four days in lovely surroundings, creating functional baskets in traditional styles from willow. You will be guided through the techniques of basketry and the use of simple hand tools. All you need to bring is enthusiasm and strong hands. The course is aimed at beginners but may also be suitable for those with some experience. We will begin with a simple basket to introduce you to the material and allow me to see what you may be capable of making. For this course we will be concentrating on Frame Basketry which involves building a basket on a framework of hoops and ribs. This is a versatile technique which allows a wide range of shapes and sizes while using the same simple weave. If time allows, there may be an opportunity to make other simple, decorative items such as bird feeders, stars or swifts and fish.

About The Course

Our tapestry weaving classes are suitable for beginners and developing weavers. Learn the basic techniques of woven tapestry, before going on to experiment with colour and textures in tapestry weave.

Over the course of four days, you will learn how to set up a small frame loom, consider the variety of materials and warp settings required for different designs, control the weaving tension, create shapes, angles, lines, and texture in the weave. As we begin to explore the process of woven tapestry, you will learn how to mix and blend colored yarns.

Expert tutor Fiona Hutchison has many years of teaching and artistic experience under her belt, and with her guidance, this tapestry weaving class will give you the confidence you need to bring your vision to life. As part of your tapestry weaving class, you will be encouraged to develop your own ideas and designs for weaving. Learning how to keep a visual diary or sketchbook, we will consider a range of approaches to help you develop your own personal creative language.

This tapestry weaving course will cover:

  • Warping a simple frame loom.
  • Selecting the correct warp/weft thicknesses.
  • Basic tapestry techniques: creating shapes, angles, lines.
  • Using multiple yarn bundles to blend and mix colors.
  • Developing design ideas and keeping a sketchbook.
  • Finishing and presenting your tapestry.

Students will work individually, at their own pace, and will be supported with class demonstrations and group discussions. By the end of the workshop, you will have the confidence to work independently to develop your personal weaving style.

More Reviews...

This course was absolutely fantastic in giving you a very in depth introduction to upholstery and French polishing. The class was very small so everyone got time and attention to create beautiful pieces and everything was provided and all I had to take along was a piece of chosen fabric – this really took the pressure off getting organised for the course.
