"I was seeking a unique holiday experience when I discovered that Gartmore House offers residential Mixed Media Book Objects courses near me. It was exactly what I was looking for!"

About The Course

Many artists have taken the form and possibilities of the book and transformed these into imagery and objects of beauty and intrigue. During this course, you will be inspired by the works of various artists and be sensitively led as you gather a body of mixed-media pieces, incorporating drawing, painting with written and inscribed notes, moving easily from monochrome to colour as Brigid guides you through the exciting creative process of making richly textured mixed-media ‘pages’ and then gathering these together into simple yet beautiful and original concertina book forms.

Brigid, whose own work has included collaborations with writers and poets such as Seamus Heaney, Kathleen Jamie and Kirsty Gunn, is continually inspired equally by the natural world and by form of the book and its enduring importance in our culture.

After introducing her own work and that of other artists working in this exciting field, Brigid will guide participants in creating range of basic book forms with paper, before assisting each student in developing some of these forms into personal ‘book-objects’, which may be held or wall-hung, or both. Mixed-media creative processes will be explored with an approach designed to help each participant in tapping into their individual responses to what a book, or books, means for them.

Your Course Tutor: Brigid Collins

Brigid is an artist and educator whose practice is deeply rooted in close and loving observation of the natural world. She makes paintings and drawings inspired by poetry as well as working in three-dimensions and with the form of the book and is most often drawn to the tactility and sensuousness of materials such as pastels, watercolour, porcelain, tissue, wire and wax, encapsulating fragility and strength in equal measure. She has collaborated and published books with poets and authors Seamus Heaney, Kathleen Jamie and Kirsty Gunn and, most recently, also with Christine De Luca, while spending a year as Artist in Residence at Dr. Neil’s Garden in Duddingston, Edinburgh where she recently exhibited at Playfair’s wonderful Thomson’s Tower, set deep in the garden and on the shores of the loch.

Having just spent such a very happy and healing time working almost exclusively outdoors, Brigid is currently focussing on developing new work. She hopes to begin to find ways to build on this practice of working ‘en plein air’, while at the same time enjoying time being back in the studio, which really is an extension of herself and a place to create in a different way, akin to inhabiting one of her favourite poems…

“I’ve loved history ever since I was a child but I didn’t know that if there were any archaeology courses near me, so I was thrilled when I found Gartmore House.”

About The Course

Delve into the world archaeology with expert tutor, Ian Hill on a 5-night archaeology course at Gartmore House.

With a mix between theoretical and practical skills, these archaeology courses might just be the head start you need for future historical expeditions.

This holiday will use Gartmore House and its grounds as a study area to provide an introduction to archaeological research, recording, and field survey. The course will provide skills training in where and how to research historical information, including maps, archaeological records, aerial photographs, and historical documents. Once you have analysed the documents, you will learn how to create a map of all identified sites and relevant records using free and readily available GIS software.

Once you have your maps completed, you will head out into the field to investigate and record the sites that you have identified, as well as learning how to read a landscape and identify any other archaeological sites in the area (what may look like innocuous lumps and bumps could actually be the remains of sites and monuments that are hundreds or thousands of years old!).

You will also learn how to ‘read’ a building, identifying and recording different architectural styles and features of Gartmore House, before heading back to base to pull together everything that you have learnt and found.
