Your Course Tutor: Nadja Shields

Nadja’s family has always been a very crafty lot. Some of her fondest childhood memories are of spending many blissful hours making Christmas decorations, mask sculptures and paintings with her mother and grandmother. But copper wire was not her first love! That title belongs to micro macramé which she first learned while living in Eswatini in Southern Africa for 17 years. In fact, she did not start wire weaving until late 2016!

She first began teaching classes and when she started working for JewelleryMaker as a guest designer, she had to find out more about the craft. Even from just learning the simplest weaves, a great new love was born!

Nadja is constantly on the lookout for new techniques and new ways of creating so that she can pass on the very best techniques to her students.

You will learn ways to build tones and also techniques to resist and remove ink. Our subject matter will vary from the natural world to still life, landscape and abstract. Over the 4 day course you will use various types of ink: Drawing Ink, Indian Ink, Chinese Ink, Acrylic Ink, Metallic Ink and Handmade Ink. Along with using conventional brushes and dip pens to apply the ink you will try non conventional tools allowing unique-expressive mark-making.

There will also be the chance to make your own pen. Time will be spent each day to consolidate the learning and create a more considered piece, with 1-1 input from Catherine and friendly group chats. Tuition will take place in one of the bright, light-filled studios in the main house, if the weather is kind we can take the opportunity to draw outside in the beautiful grounds.
