    Millinery Holiday

Please note: The above reviews come from past workshops and courses run by the tutor out with Gartmore House.

    Your Course Tutor: Susie Rodgers

Susie Rodgers is an award-winning milliner specialising in creating bespoke hats and fascinators from her studio in one of Paisleys iconic thread mill buildings. She has turned her love of wearing hats into a passion for making them and she loves seeing her creations worn to special events such as weddings, Ascot and royal garden parties. She also loves inspiring and teaching others to make their own head-turning headpieces.

Susie has always loved wearing hats so it was perhaps inevitable that the first career she embarked on would require her to wear a hat most days, although the yellow safety hat she wore working in health and safety management is nowhere near as stylish as the ones she creates today! She hung up her safety hat in 2003 during a career break to raise her son but when he went off to school instead of picking back up the safety hat Susie went to college to study millinery. By the end of the second week she realised that making hats, not safety policies, is what she should have been doing with her life!

    About The Course

Would you like to do something a little bit different this New Year’s Eve?

It’s no secret that we’re always on the look out for ways to make our guests’ stays as special as possible. That’s why we came up with Hobbying at Hogmany, a unique New Year’s getaway.

If you enjoy art or craft, we invite you to spend 5 nights with us in our quaint and quirky 18th century home, with beautiful period features, comfortable en-suite accommodation and delicious home-made food. Bring your hobby with you, whether that’s your paint brushes, knitting needles, sewing machine or even walking boots, enjoy the peace and quiet of the house, make use of our wonderful art and craft rooms and work on your own project at your leisure.

Settle in by the fire, enjoy the picturesque vistas, and join us at Gartmore House on New Year’s Eve for Hobbying at Hogmanay.
Over the course of your stay, we will organise an optional visit to a local historic attraction, giving you the chance to take in the mountains, lochs and glens of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, as well as fascinating historic sights. And if it’s too much of a struggle to tear yourself away from the roaring, open fire in the lounge, that’s absolutely fine – just relax and enjoy the stunning views over to Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument or dabble away at a crossword or jigsaw puzzle.

On the evening of the 31st December, we have a couple of options for you. Perhaps you’d prefer a quiet, cosy night with a special Hogmanay meal before retiring by the fire – or maybe you’re looking for a livelier way to see in the New Year, in which case you can choose to attend our local ceilidh in the village of Gartmore, bringing in the bells with a traditional village feel.

We want to take the stress out of travel, especially over the festive period, so to make your journey go smoothly we offer a complimentary scheduled pick up and drop off service from Stirling train station, which has excellent rail links with Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Our holidays are suited to individuals and couples alike, so for a low key, get-away-from-it-all New Year you need look no further!

“If you want to spend your holiday doing some hill walking training near you, I can’t recommend Gartmore enough, the location is fantastic.”

    About The Course

Nestled within the heart of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, Gartmore House is situated in the best location for a hill walking holiday.

Walking holidays are a wonderful way to experience Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. Everywhere you look, there’s lush greenery, rolling hills, and dense forests, and over the course of your 5-night stay, you’ll get to explore plenty of it!

Our guided hill walking training will give you the chance to discover the best of the Scottish landscape. David Walsh, owner of Emmaus Adventure and qualified mountain leader, will be your guide throughout. Many people may aspire to enjoy exploring on foot, but perhaps lack the confidence to just go for it on their own.

During your stay you will enjoy a selection of walks throughout Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. The aim of this holiday is to help budding walkers to feel comfortable climbing their first Munro or Corbett and pick up a bit of advice on map reading and general guidance on safely negotiating your way around some of the best hills and glens in Scotland.

You will start the week building up slowly from 4-6-hour walks to longer 6-8-hour walks; perhaps climbing one of two local Munros – Ben Lomond or Ben Ime at the end of the week.

Naturally a introduction to Scottish hill walking will include an element of the ‘mountain environment’. This can be translated as, rough terrain with no paths, mixed weather, steeper ascents and descents. As such this course is most suited to people who enjoy exercising or walking on a regular basis.
