About The Course

Finding millinery classes near you is no easy feat which is why we had to add it to our course catalogue.

Have you ever wondered how a flat piece of fabric is transformed into a 3-dimensional hat? Join award winning milliner Susie Rodgers in this Beginners Level ‘Introduction to Millinery Course’ to find out how. Susie will teach you how to block sinamay using wooden hat blocks. You’ll learn how to finish and trim your blocked hat/headpiece and by the end of the week you’ll have created your own head-turning creation that would look fabulous at any special event where the best dressed heads are wearing magnificent millinery.

What you'll learn:

  • How to block a hat/headpiece using traditional wooden hat blocks and also using every day objects you may already have at home
  • How to wire and finish your blocked shape using petersham ribbon and bias strips of sinamay
  • How to use hat elastic, hairbands and combs to help secure a heat/headpiece in place
  • How to trim your hat with sinamay flowers, loops and bows; feathers, veiling and crin

  • What you'll make:

  • At least two complete blocked and trimmed hats/headpieces ready to wear to your next special occasion
  • Feather mounts that can be made into a fabulous feather fascinator and also be used as hat trimmings

    Your Course Tutor: Susie Rodgers

Susie Rodgers is an award-winning milliner specialising in creating bespoke hats and fascinators from her studio in one of Paisleys iconic thread mill buildings. She has turned her love of wearing hats into a passion for making them and she loves seeing her creations worn to special events such as weddings, Ascot and royal garden parties. She also loves inspiring and teaching others to make their own head-turning headpieces.

Susie has always loved wearing hats so it was perhaps inevitable that the first career she embarked on would require her to wear a hat most days, although the yellow safety hat she wore working in health and safety management is nowhere near as stylish as the ones she creates today! She hung up her safety hat in 2003 during a career break to raise her son but when he went off to school instead of picking back up the safety hat Susie went to college to study millinery. By the end of the second week she realised that making hats, not safety policies, is what she should have been doing with her life!
